Willow Tit Habitat Creation at Steetley Meadows

Volunteers at Steetley Meadows have been managing an area of the site with willow tits in mind, to attract these elusive, fussy birds and hopefully increase their population. The Dunsmore team helped out, with guidance from Helen of the Tame Valley Wetlands, by creating more nesting habitats for willow tits. To do this, we were attaching silver birch logs onto living trees, to increase the amount of standing dead wood in the woodland. Willow tits like to excavate their own nesting holes, and they need standing dead wood in order to do this. We hope that these makeshift dead trees will help the willow tits in future years!
