We worked closely with Wolston St Margaret’s Primary School and Smiths Concrete to create the Wolston Quarry Lifecycle Trail.
The Trail follows the public footpath through the quarry. It features three new information boards which tell the story of the quarrying process; from the archaeology which unearths secrets of ancient settlements, through the extraction of gravel for local building projects, to restoring the site back to farmland and a new nature reserve. It was a really interesting project to work on as most interpretation at quarry sites goes in after quarrying has finished and restoration has taken place.
Year 6 pupils visited the quarry and created pieces of work to go onto the boards. The trail will provide a valuable learning resource for the school when covering learning about the local area.
UPDATE: The project was entered into the Heidelberg Quarry Life Award 2022 in the Community Project category and we were delighted to win the UK award!
