Bubbenhall Quarry

Prehistoric artefacts

The earliest artefact in Warwickshire’s archaeological record was found at Wood Farm quarry in Bubbenhall in the sediments of an ancient river now known as the Bytham.

A hand-axe made from andesite was discovered in the quarry face which has been dated to the lower Palaeolithic around 524,000 to 474,000 years ago. It is believed that Homo Heidelbergensis (the ancestor of Homo Sapiens and Homo Neanderthalensis) may have lost the axe.
